"Ahem, Aunt May, don’t get any ideas about my wife." Sylvan Cheney cleared his throat, his voice low and deep.
He tightened his arm around Jasmine Yale a little more, as if afraid soone might take her away.
"I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare." Aunt May chuckled, her eyes crinkling with amusent. "Jasmine, I’ve never seen Sylvan this protective over soone. You have to be happy, okay?"
Aunt May had always wholeheartedly wished them well. The more she looked at them, the more she felt Jasmine Yale and Sylvan Cheney were a perfect match.
"Thank you, Aunt May." Jasmine smiled, revealing two shallow dimples.
"What’s your major, Jasmine?"
"Journalism," Jasmine replied.
"Which university?"
"The University of Cakago."
"Oh, an international student—impressive and smart," Aunt May complinted. "Aren’t the boys overseas good-looking? I hear mixed-race ones are even more handso."
"They’re okay, but not as handso as Sylvan." Jasmine shyly smiled.
Sylvan squinted slightly, giving Jasmine a doting glance, his eyes full of satisfaction.
His chiseled face softened, and his usually sharp eyebrows and eyes were now imbued with a tender warmth.
Unprepared, Aunt May felt a sweet pang in her chest. Watching Jasmine, she felt utterly pleased with Sylvan Cheney.
Sylvan walked over to the water cooler, poured a cup of hot water for Jasmine, and sat beside her, listening to the two won chat away.
Normally, he had little interest in such dostic chitchat, but today he seed oddly entertained.
He didn’t interrupt, just listened to them talk.
When won start chatting, the topics feel endless, jumping from studies to shopping, from shopping to food—they could talk about anything under the sun.
The room was warm and cozy.
Jasmine didn’t have any elders, so Sylvan had introduced Aunt May to her. Aunt May had beco her family.
Jasmine actually loved this kind of feeling—the feeling of being part of a family.
That was why, when she first learned her father and brother might still be alive, she couldn’t let it go. She wanted to learn their whereabouts from Sylvan.
This persistence had lasted a long ti.
Now, she no longer asked.
Thinking of this, she leaned closer to Sylvan.
Today, he was wearing a dark gray sweater. Leaning against him felt especially comfortable.
She placed the cup on the coffee table in front of her and, unable to resist, wrapped her small hand around his arm, refusing to let go.
Aunt May seed to notice Jasmine’s thoughts and smiled, "I won’t keep you two any longer. I have a surgery later. Sylvan, bring Jasmine to our place when you’re free. Your uncle will cook for you."
"Of course," Sylvan agreed.
After saying goodbye to Aunt May, Jasmine held onto Sylvan’s arm as they walked out of the room together.
In the empty corridor, Jasmine suddenly stopped and threw herself into Sylvan’s arms.
Sylvan hugged her, his large hand gently patting her back. His voice was soft and tender, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing, I just feel like holding you, the kind of hold where I won’t let go." Jasmine buried her little head in his chest, refusing to lift it or part from him.
His chest was warm, broad, and comforting.
Only in monts like this, when she held him tightly and had him all to herself, did she feel the safest.
Because she didn’t know how long she could hold him—whether it would last just for today, or for a lifeti.
Sylvan laughed, looking down at Jasmine as if she were a child who hadn’t grown up. His lips curved into a doting smile.
He tightened his embrace around her as well.
This hug was pure and warm, without the slightest hint of impurity.
"I don’t want to let go. I just want to hold you like this forever."
