Chapter 937: Expedition.
“What is this?”
Alan inquired, catching the file Maxwell threw at him.
Maxwell ruffled his hair and approached his seat, taking his tie off in the process. He seemed tired, mentally and physically. With a groan, he answered.
“It’s the list of people who will be going with you to the expedition. It is a team of about fifty people, ten people each from the five organizations involved. Twilight, Titan, Behemoth, The Association, and the World Government.”
“Oh.”
Alan nodded as he began to read through the file. He knew of Amanda Wells, who would be on the mission beside him, but was unaware of who else would be acpanying him. To his surprise, he found a few familiar names on the list.
Alexander, Olivia, Henry Fornum, as well as Elaine Parker. Two of his classmates from Shield, as well as Elijah’s close friends. He remembered Elaine well, but was at a bit of a loss to Henry.
“…Hmmm, who was he again?”
Alan muttered to himself; thankfully, Maxwell was there to remind him.
“Henry Fornum, younger brother of Ezra Fornum, affinities of Wind and Lightning, and his weapon of choice is a bow. He would be the heir of Behemoth if a monster like Ezra didn’t exist.”
“Ahhh, that guy that always tried to crack jokes back in Shield… I remember him now.”
Alan scanned the file, reading about the other people assigned to them. They were all outstanding awakened that were pretty famous, and oddly enough, had a good synergy with one another.
Whether it be teamwork or elemental affinity, Alan found the entire group to go well with one another. Each one of them had their strengths that plemented one another, and made up for the weaknesses of the other.
They were all pretty famous as well, Alan hoped he wouldn’t meet a guy with an obnoxious attitude. From Twilight’s side, it was mainly the new generation of awakened, those that had joined after him. The cream of the crop, which included Alexander. Olivia was also ing as a temporary member of Twilight.
From Titan, Elaine was the center point, with her party that depended on her healing ability, as well as a high ranked awakened to protect her, courtesy of her father most likely. From Behemoth, it was Henry, along with a plethora of older awakened.
From the Association and the World Government, it was the same as Titan and Twilight. Popular young people with bright futures. Behemoth was the only one with an odd lineup. Alan didn’t focus on it too much, reading about the mission details.
The details were as followed, they were supposed to go by military aircraft all the way to Las Vegas, let the members of the Association and World Government handle matters there and then go to the state of Arizona, or more accurately.
Phoenix, which had been lost to mass dungeon formations. The dungeons overtook the city, and resulted in seventy percent of the citizens dead, the rest evacuation during the time of the invasions. The expedition was supposed to clear out the monsters, and subdue the three ‘great’ monsters, S-ranked ones, with Amanda Well’s unique skill.
It was to increase the amount of S-rank beasts under her arsenal, before the final challenge. After clearing out the city, with the help of the military, they would go back to Las Vegas, rest for a while and go northwest, to the ‘lost’ states of California and Oregon, visit the city of Sacramento to visit a few dungeons and aid Amanda Wells, as well as for training everybody on the expedition… and there was a blank section as well for some odd reason.
“Wait, isn’t Sacramento a hub for the demonic humans? Why are we going there?”
Alan inquired, curious. Maxwell turned to look at him, astonished.
“… Damn, your actually aware of that.”
He adjusted his glasses, as he explained.
“It’s a hub for demonic human activity, but they are a colony that doesn’t have any affiliation to the Obelisk, the actual terrorist organization. Basically, any demonic human that doesn’t want to get involved with the Obelisk runs to Sacramento. The Association leaves them alone because of that.
Though, some of the residents, or should I say, crime lords do have some dealings with the Obelisk. Most of them, however, avoid it. The five organizations have some connections with some of the major crime lords. It’s basically a training exercise to get the new recruits used to the dark parts of life.”
Alan turned his head, confused.
“Isn’t that stupid? Why send so many to a crime city just for that?”
Maxwell chuckled, as he explained.
“It is stupid. Your all bait, see. The Association and the World Government wants to know where Sacramento’s loyalty lies. They want to see if the crime lords, or the mafia, can control the guys who have deep ties with the Obelisk.”
They want to see if they will act against the Expedition, and if they do, you’ll receive an order to destroy the city.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you and Amanda Wells. If the Mafia wants to act up against the Association, or is unable to control the rowdy part of it, it’s better to get rid of it before the War. You and Amanda are both the bait and the executioner, well, you are, at least.”
“So if anything suspicious happens, I report it and get permission to annihilate the entire city? Isn’t that going overboard? Also, what guarantee is there that they won’t go against us during the War?”
Alan questioned, finding the entire task to be… odd, at best. He was capable of destroying the entire city, even without Amanda Wells, but he was finding the entire thing to be tedious…
Also, there was no guarantee that the supposed demonic human mafia wouldn’t just betray them during the War. Surely they weren’t just thinking of using an immense number of contracts to enforce order, were they?
Maxwell shrugged his shoulders, saying.
“I don’t know why either, maybe Harrison is planning something? Though I wonder how exactly he is going to force obedience on them without killing them… Probably through fear?
Maybe that’s why he is sending you? You’d be enough to instill fear into them…”
And then, suddenly, Richard burst into the room with a panicked expression on his face.
